Oh baby diaper cakes. What’s not to like, a super cute gift that is also useful? Say it isn’t so. As much as I enjoy looking at cute things, when items have an actual purpose I tend to enjoy them a smidge more. Some of you might have seen them a hundred times and may have even made a few yourself, for those that haven’t here’s a tutorial. Trust me when I say they are very easy and fun to make. These are some basic ones I have made. But let your imagination go wild. I have recently seen some amazing diaper structures and I can’t wait till my next Baby Shower to make one. A motorcycle diaper cake? How amazing is that.
List of Materials:
- Diapers ( I usually use size 1)
- Round cake pans
- Rubber bands
- Paper towel or two toilet paper roll
- Cardboard or cake board
- Wrapping paper of choice
- Hot glue + glue gun
– Flower wire
Step 1: Make Cake Base
Take your cardboard and trace out a circle 2″ larger than your largest cake pan. I just used the next size up. Trace, cut and cover with wrapping paper. If you are using a cake board cover that if you would like.
Step 2: Make first layer
Take your first diaper, plain side facing outwards and continuously add additional diapers, overlapping and spiralling inwards. Continue until you have just enough room for the cardboard roll ( I taped two toilet rolls together). Make sure it’s nice and snug.
Step Three: Wrap the entire layer with two elastic bands
Step Four: Repeat above steps with next layers ( I usually only make two layers but you can make as many as you like)
Step Five: Cover the elastic bands with ribbons and embellish away. Wrap it all up with cellophane is also a nice finishing touch.
Here’s one I made for a Story Book Theme Baby Shower
Here’s one for a little boy.
And for a little girl. It was a busy weekend.
For this one I actually used the hole at the very top as a “vase” for some artificial flowers. Just popped the whole stem in there.
